You can prevent damage to your home by getting your gutters cleaned regularly. This is one home improvement task that you Do Not want to neglect. If left untreated, clogged gutters and damaged caused by leaks can lead to costly repairs. How do you clean gutters? Cleaning out your gutters is easier than you think.
Here are some tools you will need before you start:
- Work Gloves;
- A Sturdy Ladder;
- Gutter Sealant (to seal seams and prevent leaks);
- Large Garbage Pail;
- Gutter Cleaning Attachment (to remove debris); and
- A Garden Hose.
You will want to begin by cleaning the downspout to remove twigs, dirt, and leaves. Use the garden hose to flush out any debris. If you notice that water isn’t properly draining through the downspout, then it is likely your gutter is clogged.
Backed up or clogged gutters can cause rainwater to settle on the roof and cause the shingles to become loose. This can cause rotting in the fascia and soffit. If you’re unable to clean out your gutters, delegate the task to a professional.
What happens if you fail to clean your gutters?
Often times homeowners will neglect getting their gutters cleaned because there may not be any noticeable damage to the home or property. Or, they have more important tasks to handle around the house.
Over a period of time, if rainwater isn’t being properly shifted away from the house into a proper drainage area, debris will accumulate in the gutter channel and cause water to overflow onto the home and foundation.
How often should you get your gutters cleaned?
We recommend getting your gutters cleaned at least twice a year… once in late spring and again in early fall. However, if trees are growing above your house, a gutter inspection should be done every three months. You should also get your gutters inspected immediately after a storm.
If you notice that your gutters are constantly accumulating debris, install gutter shields. Just keep in mind, gutter shields should not be used as a substitute for regular gutter maintenance.
